Frequently asked questions
What happens if I include spaces or hyphens in the number?
The validator automatically strips common formatting characters — spaces, hyphens, parentheses, and dots — before validating. So +91 (98765) 43210, 98765-43210, and 9876543210 are all treated identically.
What is Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in India?
Mobile Number Portability allows Indian subscribers to switch telecom operators while keeping the same number. This means the operator detected from the number prefix may not match the actual current operator if the number has been ported. TRAI introduced MNP in India in 2011.
Can I validate landline numbers with this tool?
This tool is designed for Indian mobile numbers (6–9 series). Indian landlines have a different structure — they include an STD area code followed by the subscriber number (total 8–11 digits depending on the city). Landline validation is not supported in the current version.
What is the difference between a valid and active Indian number?
This tool validates the format and structure of Indian phone numbers per TRAI rules. It cannot verify whether a number is active, registered, or currently in use — that would require a telecom lookup API or OTP verification. Format validation only checks that the number could theoretically be a valid Indian mobile number.
